Simulation Platform for Automatic Platooning Using a Driving Simulator
Automatic platooning is expecting to increase the efficiency of freight transportation and to reduce energy consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. However, driving safety and reliability need to be confirmed before applying automatic platooning to public highways. To confirm the performance of automatic platooning, the authors constructed a simulation platform for automatic platooning using a universal driving simulator. The driving safety and reliability of automatic platooning, especially during an emergency situation, can be investigated using the platform. Experiments showed that the proposed simulation platform can simulate an emergency situation, such as the failure of the controller, and is effective for examining driver behavior.
