North Dakota Statewide Traffic Safety Survey, 2010: Traffic Safety Performance Measures for State and Federal Agencies

The initial statewide driver traffic safety survey provides baseline metrics for the North Dakota Department of Transportation Traffic Safety Office and others in understanding perceptions and behaviors related to focus issues. A core set of questions addresses nationally agreed upon priorities, including seat belts, drinking, and speeding. In addition, questions were included to ascertain views of teen drivers and on specific programs and activities. Results show that many North Dakota drivers have adopted safe practices, but it is apparent that efforts are still needed to improve safety on the state’s roads. Within the driver population, a target driver population of young male drivers engages in relatively high risk driving practices and has some disregard for reducing potential for crash injury through consistent seat belt use. Surprisingly, few differences were found in comparing drivers by region and geography.
