HOW TO CONDUCT SEISMIC OPERATIONS IN "HARDWATER"

Discusses ice conditions in Canadian arctic shipping routes as observed in summer/fall 1969 under Operation Polarquest to gain knowledge for design of seismic ships in ice-covered areas. The breakup and behavior of the ice in Beaufort Sea, Prince of Wales Strait and Viscount Melville Sound are discussed, as are the basic variables affecting operation: percentage of ice coverage, ice type, thickness and pressure. The use of aerial scouting and maps are also dealt with. Three type areas are discussed: 1) where standard seismic ship operations are feasible with ice-breaker support; 2) where ice-strengthened vessels are required; 3) where unnavigable as shown on map. Length of operation season is indicated with supporting data. Ship and siesmic gear qualifications are given.
