Understanding Pittsburgh International Airport's Pavement Management Program
Airport pavements are a key element of the commercial airport infrastructure that needs to be significantly improved to meet the needs of future generations in the United States. Though the Pittsburgh International Airport already has an existing pavement management program, several methods have been developed in this project to obtain a better understanding of how MicroPAVER, an essential component of the program, actually works. A Markov Model was created to determine the condition states of the different branches and the probability of entering each state with regards to the Pavement Condition Index (PCI). Then a geographic information system (GIS) model was constructed for better visualization of the relevant data on the map. Cost analysis was also conducted to obtain the information of construction cost per square. The existing pavement program for the Pittsburgh International Airport presents important information for use in decision making, such as PCI of different sections and branches. Though there was not much room for improving the existing program, approaches developed for this project show a better understanding of the methods of assets management at the airport.
