Infrastructure Champions
In 2012, the Region 9 of the American Society of Civil Engineers released its second Infrastructure Report Card for California. This article summarizes results from this report and compares the current state of infrastructure with results from the 2006 Report Card. From 2006 to 2012, four categories improved slightly: aviation; levees/flood control; ports; and transportation. Three categories remained the same (solid waste, wastewater and urban runoff). Only one category—water—declined. The overall grade average was a “C” and no category received higher than a “B.” These findings highlight the need for more investment in infrastructure in California to maintain the current infrastructure while building what is needed for the future.
