Florida School Crossing Guard Program

This project administered all aspects of the Florida School Crossing Guard Training Program funded through the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). The purpose of this program was to enhance and maintain Florida’s existing school crossing guard program, which has become a national model for enhancing out-of-school safety for walking and biking students. This involved the training of trainers to teach skills and knowledge required for individual certification as a School Crossing Guard, as well as the evaluation of the operational effectiveness of school crossing guard programs throughout the state of Florida. The University of Florida hired a University of Florida Safety Coordinator as the Florida School Crossing Guard Training Program (FSCGTP) Administrator to work closely with the FDOT Safety Office. The University of Florida Safety Coordinator was charged with all day-to-day operations of the program, including the trainer certification process, training crossing guard trainers, providing on-site and off-site technical assistance, giving presentations on the program, and maintaining/updating the program website. The University of Florida Safety Coordinator was located in Tallahassee, at the FDOT Safety Office.
