MAINTENANCE PROBLEMS IN NORTH SEA DRILLING RIGS

Offshore structures, such as drilling rigs, are subjected to the same corrosive environment as are ships, but have an added problem in that they cannot, due to their design, simply steam into drydock at regular intervals and have maintenance work done to keep corrosion to a minimum. For these offshore structures, the solution to this problem is a properly formulated coating system that is used when the structure is first built. This article describes some of the coating systems that are used, such as inorganic zinc silicates, vinyl coatings, chlorinated rubber, and their comparative effectiveness. The choice of coating to be used, its application and subsequent maintenance is also discussed. It is concluded that if the structure had been properly coated when it was built, not a great deal of repair work would be necessary beyond the application of a refresher coat.
