Wireless Measurement of Electrochemical Potentials of Steel Reinforcement in Concrete Structures

A reliable diagnosis of the condition and behaviour of a structure is an important basis for an effective service life management. In order to determine the most economical point for repair measures in the life-time of a structure, the knowledge about the deterioration process at exposed regions as well as a detailed knowledge about the current condition of the whole structure is essential. Potential mapping is a helpful method to locate areas with a high risk of chloride induced corrosion. To avoid local destruction of the concrete and the use of long cables which can constrain the measurement, a method has been developed to locate areas with a high risk of reinforcement corrosion without a wired connection to the reinforcement. With the novel method presented in this publication it is possible to assess the corrosion risk in every single measurement point at the surface of the structure independently from the remaining area.
