Development of the Australian national systems architecture for intelligent transport systems

The further development of Intelligent Transport Systems [ITS] relies, in part, on the development and articulation of a systems architecture for ITS. Significant progress has already been made in the publication in 2001 of the Australian National Reference Architecture for ITS [NRA], based on extensive work by the International Standards Organisation [ISO] The Standards and Architectures Working Group of ITS Australia has been formed to undertake the further development of the NRA. The paper outlines the goals and objectives of the group. Emphasis has been placed on regional, rural and remote areas. The work plan for the group has been started with a survey of a range of participants and stakeholders in transportation involving all modes and inter-modal transfers. A second important work-product will be to start building a repository for definitions of ITS interfaces and data entities. The paper describes the organization and functioning of the group and the findings of the survey and the work program planned for further development of the national ITS systems architecture.
