Telematics and safety in road traffic
SWOV Institute for Road Safety Research and the research school TRAIL cooperate in a joint research program, aimed at developing safety criteria for (new) telematics applications in road traffic. Most of the telematics applications developed nowadays are designed for the motorway network, but road safety is a problem especially in the rural road network. Therefore, this research program focuses especially on the applications on rural roads. Since the traffic situations are far more complex (e.g. intersections, mix of road users) than in the motorway network, a conceptual and a multidisciplinary approach is needed. Starting point for the safety model is the process for policy makers to follow in order to define their position with respect to ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems).
