Determination of air voids and voids in mineral aggregate in bituminous mixtures
The void properties of a bituminous paving mixture provide a major indication of the durability characteristics of the mix. At present, considerable confusion exists when determining these values and thus their significance is difficult to assess. The main reasons for this are discussed and remedial measures are suggested. Details of an investigation, which attempts to rationalize this problem, are given. The experiments were conducted on a 3/8 inch mix and the results indicate that it would be desirable and practicable to incorporate new procedures into future investigations (a).
