Improving the transportation/ land use environment in existing urban areas
The need to consider the problems resulting from road traffic flows through the existing urban transport network is generally given a very low priority by most responsible authorities. Three lines of action to improve the transportation/ land use environment are examined in this paper. Examples of recent work in the Adelaide area are described. In general terms, it is concluded that conversion of x intersections to t junctions, closure of local streets to prevent intrusion of through traffic into residential precincts and the separation of pedestrian oriented activities from through and local vehicular traffic will have benefits which outweigh the costs (a).
