Some important aspects of construction and maintenance practice

This paper is presented as paper no 4, session two: wet environments. It details many of the points of construction and maintenance practice which are considered to be particularly important in the wet tropics. Pavement performance studies have highlighted the special problems of construction and maintenance of pavements to withstand a seasonal climate in which very heavy but quite variable and unpredictable rains follow a long dry season. These conditions demand the highest standards of construction control, particularly during the compaction and finishing of subgrades and bases. For satisfactory pavement performance during the wet season routine maintenance activities must be carried out regularly and thoroughly during the dry season, otherwise pavement distress and emergency maintenance during the wet season is compounded (a).
