Design to preserve and enhance the environment

This paper is presented as paper no 3, session one. The context of this paper deals with features of designs to enhance the environment and is specifically related to the environmental considerations at intersections, the treatment of batters and cuts and the consideration of curvilinear alignments to preserve environmental features. The comments with regard to flora treatment are limited to the near coastal areas of South Australia or areas having rainfall in excess of 20". However, some comment is made to possible treatment in drier areas. Basically the considerations of the paper have been derived from investigations in the city and near urban areas of Adelaide and have been related to what may be considered 'good' and 'bad' standards of development which are presented in pictorial form with comments related to the considerations that may be taken to improve the environmental features.
