A folded plate approach to the analysis of box girder bridges

In this paper, an alternative elasticity method of analysis of simply supported multicell box girders, treated as multiple folded plate structures, is presented. The closed form solution is based on another formulation of the folded plate theory which utilises the plane stress elasticity solution obtained using the airy's stress function, and the classical thin plate bending theory to describe the membrane and bending actions of the individual plates comprising the structure. The analysis would require the solution of 8j simultaneous equations for each harmonic of the fourier series, where j is the number of plates in the box girder section. The proposed method of analysis would be quite useful in studying the influence of the different box girder parameters on the distribution and magnitude of the stress resultants. The parameters which significantly influence the major stress resultants in design may be used to define the range of applicability of the commonly used methods of analysis (a).
