Review of the performance of compaction plant on pavement and subgrade materials
This bulletin was presented as paper no 200, session c2 of the second conference of the Australian Road Research Board. The ensuing discussions and authors' closure were subsequently published in June 1965 as a supplement to the bulletin (pages 38-65). In the bulletin a literature review is presented which covers the performance of five different types of plant on subgrade and pavement materials. The plant types considered are the smooth wheeled grid, vibrating, sheepsfoot and pneumatic tyred rollers. As far as possible the rollers dealt with in detail are the heavier units used in road construction. Sections have also been included on the principles of compaction and the theory of vibrating rollers. The literature has been reviewed in the light of the Australian environment. The data presented will provide a guide to the standard of compaction that can be obtained with a particular roller and should also facilitate assessment of the results which can be expected from a particular roller on specific work.
