A note on the effectiveness of surround screens for road traffic signal lights
This note arose from questions asked during the discussions of a committee convened by the Australian Road Research Board to consider the requirements for an effective road traffic signal. It discussed the effectiveness of surround screens in improving signal visibility when the signal is seen against a very bright background. Since surround screens are also used to enhance the target value of an installation, the possible consequences of painting the screens a light colour are also discussed (a).
