The consolidation of a layer of saturated soil under moving loads
An ideal material is defined which has many of the properties of actual road materials. Equations are presented for the movement of pore fluid when moving surface loads are applied and boundary conditions of drainage specified. The fractional increase in mean density and in density at the bottom of the layer are defined, and calculated for a long load moving at right angles to its length. Two conditions for dimensional similarity are developed, and the influence of certain parameters suggested. The presence of a 'bow wave' and a 'stern wave' of excess pore pressure is demonstrated (A).
