The relation between accidents and layout on rural roads
This paper reviews the results of studies, carried out mainly in Great Britain, of the effect of the following aspects of rural road layout on accidents: width of carriageway, horizontal curvature, surface characteristics, and junction design. It is concluded that substantial reductions in accidents can be achieved by suitable improvements in road layout, but there are indications that the relation between accidents and certain aspects of road layout may be rather complex (A).
