Low cost protection for bus passengers
Available Australian and overseas bus accident statistics are briefly reviewed. It is seen that, in terms of passenger miles, bus travel in the state of Victoria is a relatively safe mode of transport. The experimental accident literature and literature related to bus construction and operation is reviewed in order to determine ways in which bus safety may be further improved at low cost. Because of the complete lack of detailed bus accident studies in Australia, it is not possible to state which design measures are likely to be the most effective, although some indication can be gained from experimental crash studies, the major types of accident occurring and the money that can justifiably be spent on a cost/ benefit basis (a).
