Determination of mass and dimension limits for heavy vehicles in Australia
A study of the economics of road vehicle limits has recently been completed in Australia. The objective of the study, which extended over two years under the authorization of the National Association of Australian State Road Authorities, was to determine the most appropriate limits on mass and dimensions for road vehicles to be applied nationally or in individual regions throughout Australia. Procedures were developed to take account of all aspects of the interaction between heavy vehicle loading, the road system and its environment, and other road users. The paper outlines the organization and procedures adopted, together with the issues and problems which have arisen since publication of the study's recommendations, and the progress being made with the implementation of these recommendations.
