The drinking driver - a personality profile

Two broad issues are examined in this paper; comparison of personality characteristics of "high" (at least 0.15 mg%) and low (less than 0.15 mg%) blood alcohol concentration (BAC) drivers. One group consisted of 70 male drivers convicted of driving with a BAC in excess of 0.05 mg% (the legal limit in Victoria) and referred by magistrates to attend education and rehabilitation programs conducted in Melbourne. A second group of 39 males admitted to hospital for treatment of alcohol related problems were selected. A control group of 39 males who had (a) no record of drink driving convictions, and (b) no record of admission to hospital for alcohol related problems, was selected. Two measures of personality were used: the california psychological inventory (cpi) and the eysenck personality inventory (epi). The personality maladjustment evident in the drinking driver group, and the similarity of the personality profiles of the drinking drivers and the problem drinkers indicate that the convicted drinking driver is at risk of becoming a problem drinker.
