Grade separated pedestrian crossings
This paper examines the reasons for grade separation of pedestrian crossings. Various factors which need to be taken into account such as warrants, the choice between an overpass and underpass and design considerations are discussed. The results of several studies into usage of grade separated pedestrian crossings are used to illustrate how the advantages of grade separation are often negated by poor usage of the facility. The procedures used in Victoria to select and approve grade separated pedestrian crossings are described and grade separated pedestrian crossings over freeways and in the central business district are discussed.
