Earthquake engineering
This lecture applies some of the theory developed in a previous lecture to the analysis of geotechnical structures under earthquake loading. The propagation of stress waves in an elastic medium is discussed and it is shown that in many situations earthquake loading induces horizontal or near horizontal ground vibrations only. The concept of response spectrums and the rewriting of the equations of motion for rigid base earthquake excitations is presented, followed by an extensive discussion of the incorporation of the non linear, strain dependent material property models into the analysis. Finally, some actual analyses of geotechnical structures under earthquake loadings are discussed.
