The relative performance of stabilised base materials

A series of laboratory and field tests were conducted on stabilised low grade materials to evaluate their performance as road bases. The work was initiated in order to find the best methods of utilising available materials in the Sydney region of New South Wales. The materials tested were quarry products not normally acceptable under current specification without stabilisation and a power station ash. A laboratory rolling wheel load test track and repeated load triaxial testing were used to evaluate the materials with differing stabilisation techniques and an experimental field trial was conducted with the ash. Results indicate that the existing lime stabilisation of one of the quarry products and the lime stabilised ash gave superior performance under the conditions of these tests. The test results also suggested methods of construction whereby maximum use might be made of one unstabilised quarry product and indicated directions for further investigation.
