An initial study into concrete block paving

A concrete block test pavement is being installed at the Australian Road Research Board in Melbourne, Australia. The pavement is 100 m long and 4 m wide and joins two staff car parks. It serves as an access road for staff vehicles and delivery vans and as such operates in a similar fashion to a minor residential access street. The pavement comprises ten 10 m sections, with block thickness and subbase depth varied. Four sections have no subbase provided; two of these sections will be compacted with a heavy roller as well as a plate vibrator in order to determine if initial lock up of the pavement is achieved before trafficking and if this affects subsequent performance. Pressure cells and moisture gauges will be installed into the pavement. Tests to be performed will include deflection, rut depth, moisture movement, stress distribution and noise generation. The paper describes the setting up of the test pavement and the reasons for the choice of sections and measuring apparatus.
