BUS PASSENGER WAITING TIMES IN CENTRAL AREAS
THE RESULTS OF A STUDY INITIATED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS TO EXAMINE THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN BUS SERVICE INTERVAL AND AVERAGE PASSENGER WAITING TIME UNDER PEAK AND OFF-PEAK TRAFFIC CONDITIONS IS DESCRIBED. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE ASSUMPTION OFTEN MADE THAT THE AVERAGE PASSENGER WAITING TIME EQUALS ONE-HALF THE BUS SERVICE INTERVAL DURING ON OR OFF-PEAK TRAFFIC PERIODS IS NOT CORRECT: DURING THE EVENING PEAK IN LEEDS, FROM 50 PER CENT (FIVE-MINUTE SERVICE INTERVAL) TO 30 PER CENT (12 MINUTE SERVICE INTERVAL). AT SERVICE INTERVALS BELOW 1.5 TO TWO MINUTES, THE AVERAGE WAITING TIME OF PASSENGERS ARRIVING AT RANDOM APPEARS TO BE GREATER THAN THE SERVICE INTERVAL. THERE ARE NO GROUNDS FOR SAYING THAT THE AVERAGE WAITING TIME IN OFF-PEAK PERIODS INCREASES AS THE SIZE OF THE CENTRAL AREA CONSIDERED IS INCREASED. /RRL/A/
