A systematic approach to passenger transportation and energy studies
Energy has assumed the most important role in shaping transport policy. The paramount goal is to bring about energy savings in the short and long terms without significant adverse effects on mobility, economic growth or life styles. However, strategies for energy conservation have to be based on thorough understanding of travel demand determinants, land use patterns and attitudes of people towards mobility and modes. A plan of research is outlined which would enable a systematic, comprehensive and dynamic study of travel demand and energy efficiency to be undertaken. Effects of alternative fiscal, technological and regulatory policies as well as growth assumptions on short and long term energy consumption can be assessed using this approach (a).
