Canadian commercial vehicle related research - a conspectus

Because of geographical considerations (i.E. Sharing the north American continent with one of the largest producers of commercial vehicles in the world) and jurisdictional reasons (namely, that Canada is a federated state which grants responsibility for highway transport virtually exclusively to the provinces) the trucking industry in Canada has not been the subject of consistent research until very recently. Nevertheless, momentum has been building, over the past five years, towards a co-ordinated research effort on the heavy commercial vehicle and its effects. The paper synthesises and reviews work recently completed or still being undertaken. Particular attention is given to work concerning the effects of heavy commercial vehicles on bridges, as well as to safety and energy considerations. Finally, in order to provide a balanced assessment, urban trucking research is reviewed and there is also a synoptic treatment of the administrative and regulatory requirements currently in effect (a).
