The deterioration of a dolerite escarpment
A dolerite escarpment above a mountain road near Hobart may pose a threat to tourist traffic, and a study has been made of several modes of deterioration. Relaxation, weathering and slow movement of dolerite columns leads to several kinds of instability, some of which can be dangerous. One phenomenon, the hinge block is of particular interest as its origin is obscure, but it does not present any danger (a).
