South Australian energy policy

After indicating the context in which South Australian energy policy has developed, this paper describes the approach taken by the government to dealing with energy matters. The government's approaches are discussed in terms of the need for energy policy to seek to increase the state's resource base by finding and developing new sources of energy, to conserve existing resources so that their use can be extended over the greatest period of time and to provide the best possible management framework so that the best possible decisions can be taken to satisfy both the short and long term energy requirements of South Australia. The paper describes initiatives to encourage exploration, reduce the proportion of electricity generated from natural gas, accelerate production of liquids and LPG from the Cooper Basin, reduce energy consumption by the public and private sectors, develop energy efficient approaches to building design and develop an integrated approach to energy management (a).
