Snowy mountains highway - 1980
The snowy mountains highway carries a moderate volume of traffic, but is constructed on a substandard alignment, with a narrow pavement and formation. Three mountainous sections are particularly substandard. Other hazards include steep embankments close to the road edge, the risk of snow and frosts, narrow bridges, two railway level crossings and broken pavement edges. However, the overall crash statistics compare favourably with data for main highways in NSW. Little roadwork is under way to improve the general level of service afforded to drivers using the route (a).
