Road research and information resources and needs for Papua New Guinea

The paper briefly describes the road transport infrastructure for papua new guinea, and surveys the development of the road transport system during the last decade. Particular emphasis is given to describing recent developments and existing conditions that have contributed significantly to present road transport deficiencies. This introduction is followed by sections that survey current resources and needs for road transport information and research. The following conclusions were drawn from these surveys. The significant changes in basic road transport philosophies and construction priorities following independence in 1975 have contributed to existing road problems and deficiencies in road transport planning. The road transport authorities in papua new guinea are presently agreed that the elimination of existing deficiencies can best be accomplished by developing road transport data banks, and by developing appropriate analysis procedures for establishing planning programmes and road standards. Present efforts by road authorities are being supplemented by the use of university resources, external consultants and expertise provided by international road agencies. Important benefits should result from the proposed road research institute, and from the formation of a co-ordinated programme for exchange of road research and information between countries in australasia.
