Design vehicles and turning path templates
This document contains swept path diagrams for various types of "design vehicles". A design vehicle is defined as a hypothetical vehicle whose dimensions and operating characteristics are used to establish certain aspects of road and intersection layout and geometry. The design vehicle is not intended to be the largest vehicle expected to use a road or traffic facility but it will be within the legal overall maximum dimensions applicable to unrestricted access operation. A layout design based on the characteristics of a design vehicle should represent an economical level of design which caters safely and comfortably for at least 85 percent of vehicles operating in accordance with normal traffic regulations. The types of vehicles catered for in this publication are: cars, service vehicles, single unit trucks and buses, prime movers, semi trailers, long rigid buses, articulated buses, long semi trailers, B-doubles, and road trains.
