SOUND GEAR QUALITY
Noise and vibration in gearing are related and can be real measures of quality. Whereas noisy gears may indicate premature wear and failure, smooth and quiet operation indicates long life. A discussion of the designing of gears for quiet operation is presented, with emphasis on accuracy, precautions, and noise reducing materials considered, as well as possible sources of gear-system noise.
