A DIRECT-READING POCKET SHEAR VANE
A POCKET-SIZE VANE INSTRUMENT FOR THE PURPOSE OF ASSESSING THE SHEAR STRENGTH OF COHESIVE SOILS HAS BEEN DEVELOPED. THE INNER END OF A STEEL HELICAL SPRING IS HELD IN A CENTRAL SPINDLE CARRYING THE VANE ROD; THE OUTER END IS ATTACHED TO THE ALUMINUM CASING. WHEN THE VANE INSTRUMENT IS OPERATING, THE VANE PUSHES THROUGH THE SOIL AND THE TORSION HEAD ROTATES AT A CONSTANT SPEED. VANES OF FOUR DIFFERENT DIAMETERS WERE TESTED, BUT ONLY TWO (0.75 AND 1.3 IN) PROVED TO BE SUFFICIENT FOR COVERING THE STRENGTH RANGE OF NORMALLY CONSOLIDATED CLAYS AND REMOLDED CLAYS. IN ORDER TO TEST THE RELIABILITY OF THE INSTRUMENT, TESTS WERE CONDUCTED ON UNDISTURBED SAMPLES AND COMPARED WITH THE RESULTS OF TRIAXIAL TESTS.
