BURNING METHANE IN LARGE, CROSSHEAD DIESELS
Sulzer Brothers, Winterthur, Switzerland has successfully demonstrated a large, two-stroke diesel engine that can burn methane gas with only a small amount of liquid pilot fuel. The engine is a six-cyl unit with a bore of 30 in. ( 76cm ) delivering some 9000 bhp at 120 rpm. A chart gives performance results for a 6RD76 dual-fuel engine. Details are given for special engine design features, control equipment, leakage precautions, derating for higher hydrocarbons, and the hypothetical economics of a methane carrier equipped with this type of propulsion.
