An international review of transport strategies and urban development objectives

Transport and urban development are inextricably related. The interaction influences the financial, social and physical well-being of people at urban, regional, national and international levels. Transport provides the opportunity for people to overcome the spatial environment and partake in desired activities. Each change in transport technology (ship, rail, automobile and telecommunications) can stimulate or discourage urban development. Changes in urban structure have a considerable impact on the utilisation of the transport system. This paper addresses the evolution of the urban development/transport interaction in several metropolises with some background on their locations and roles. A set of general urban objectives; urban and transport strategies and how they aid in the realisation of these objectives are discussed; the role of data and modelling in developing and monitoring the impact of these strategies; the history of management procedures for implementing and monitoring urban and transport strategies are discussed.
