ELECTROCHEMICAL ASPECTS OF CORROSION FATIGUE

The current status of corrosion fatigue phenomena in metals and alloys is briefly reviewed, with special reference to the mechanism and preventive measures. The electrochemical techniques employed in studying corrosion fatigue in different environments are then discussed in detail, highlighting recent developments. These cover: (a) fatigue strength and corrosion rate, pH and polarization; (b) preventive methods, chiefly cathodic protection and corrosion inhibitors, (c) mechanism and (d) comparison with stress corrosion cracking. It is concluded that electrochemical factors play a significant role in understanding the failure of metals due to corrosion fatigue and its prevention.
