Automatic network travel time system

The ANTTS project has developed through several phases and will continue to be developed as an aid in congestion management. Its initial purpose was to provide continuous travel time data. Several pilot projects were conducted and a number of competing technologies were examined before a decision was made on the final design. The system chosen employs VHF radio technology to transmit and receive data on vehicle and intersection identification together with time of detection. The SCATS data transmission lines are used to transmit the ANTTS data. Approximately 200 signalised intersections are fitted with ANTTS interrogators while approximately 2000 vehicles are fitted with ANTTS tags. The system has also been extended to include the STA Airport Express Bus Route and will provide passenger information displays on bus arrival time. The ANTTS data gives travel time between specific links and has the potential to report the data in any tabular or graphical form depending on users' needs. The applications for ANTTS are limitless and it is applicable to both strategic and operational settings.
