The customer, the environment and the gasoline powered vehicle

It is the thesis of this paper that gasoline will continue to be the fuel of general use for the foreseeable future in the US., and how far we can go in producing a high fuel economy, gasoline powered vehicle depends on the trade-offs we are willing to make to get it. The paper focuses on the contribution that improved gasoline engine technology can make in lowering fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. It asks two fundamental questions: How far can we go in gasoline technology? and what "price" must we pay to achieve these levels?
