POLYNUCLEAR AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS IN THE PARTICULATES OF DIESEL EXHAUSTS IN RAILWAY TUNNELS AND IN THE PARTICULATES OF AN URBAN ATMOSPHERE

The identification of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons in the particule matter arising from the operation of heavy diesel locomotives in railway tunnels is described. Results are compared with those derived from a similar analysis of particulates collected from an urban atmosphere. Although diesel operation in the tunnels increased the particulate loading to eight times normal, the detectable amounts of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons were such as might be found from the particulates carried into the tunnel by ventilating air. Chromatographic and spectrophotometric methods were used. Production of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons be efficiently operated diesel locomotives is negligible in comparison with the formation of this group by general combustion of fuels in urban activities.
