Field trials of pavement structures: construction report - Western Australia
This report summarises the design and construction, and the results of initial field and laboratory testing, of the test sections installed by the Western Australia main roads department, as their contribution to ARRB project 357 - field trials of pavement structures. Fifteen sections were constructed. Sections 1 to 8 consisted of a limestone subbase, crushed rock or stabilised bases, and an asphalt surface. Sections 9 to 12 were either crushed rock or full depth asphalt pavements, and sections 13 to 15 contained tar, flyash and/or lime stabilised material. All sections were constructed on sand subgrades. The strength of the sand in sections 9 to 12 was found to be higher than expected and these sections will probably survive much longer than initially envisaged. The rebound surface deflections on all sections at construction were satisfactory. Results of laboratory and field testing of all the pavement layers are included in the report, including a comparison of the sand replacement and nuclear meter methods of determining in situ density (a).
