Fatigue strength of beams at cover plate terminations

The fatigue strength of beams with transversely end welded cover plates is examined in a parametric study using finite element methods and fracture mechanics. The variables in the parametric study are; 1) the cover plate thickness, 2) the size of the weld, 3) width of the cover plate, 4) the degree of taper, 5) the width of the cover plate termination and 6) the slope of the transverse end weld. Failure may occur as a result of a crack initiating at the toe or root of the transverse end weld. Both modes of failure are considered in the study (a).
