THREE-DIMENSIONAL PHOTOELASTIC STUDY OF A PROPELLER BLADE ROOT
Three-dimensional photoelastic stress analysis techniques were used to evaluate stresses around the counterbored holes for the hold-down bolts of a simulated propeller blade. Eight and half pound models were assembled from parts cast from the cold setting epoxy resin Araldite 502 with Hardener 956. Stress-freezing procedures made use of slices and cores. Locations and relative magnitudes of maximum principal stresses were determined and an indication of the principal stress axes warpage was obtained.
