NEW CONCEPT IN SHIP RUDDER DESIGN

A new form of rudder has been conceived which should correct most of the problems with existing rudders. The new rudder comprises a pair of cambered hydrofoils hinged to a vertical support strut which houses the steering machinery and transmits the steering side force to the hull. When zero side force is desired the fins are held in the horizontal position. The fins are lowered to equal angles below the horizontal to develop a side force to port and are raised to equal angles above the horizontal to develop a side force to starboard. This new steering system will be a great deal more effective than conventional rudders when the propeller is operating at high slip conditions. The major problem foreseen is that the primary actuating machinery elements will be inaccessible and therefore repairs at sea will be impossible. Thus, the reliability factor must be a major design consideration. However, it is sincerely believed that this new concept of steering system design represents a major advance in ship maneuvering systems and it is hoped that its development into a workable system for general use will soon be initiated and expedited.
