Development of a stable foundation for highway railroad grade crossings

A rating scale for highway railroad grade crossings has been presented. This scale has been used in a field evaluation survey of 40 crossing sites which have been improved since 1973 in district 17 of the Texas state department of highways and public transportation. The evaluation procedure can be used in conjunction with the rating scale to determine the crossings which are most in need of repair or replacement. A modified version of the rating form is currently being used by sdhpt personnel in an attempt to build the database needed for evaluation. Also presented in this report is a conceptual design for an improved highway railroad grade crossing. This design is intended to reduce the temporal variations in subgrade stiffness and to minimize the deterioration of the highway pavement and railroad trackbed approaches to the crossing (a).
