SOIL/CHEMICAL MEASUREMENTS
A NUMBER OF TECHNIQUES HAVE BEEN EMPLOYED FOR MEASURING THE INCORPORATION OF CHEMICALS INTO SOIL, BUT A NEW METHOD IS SIMPLE, RAPID AND INEXPENSIVE. RESEARCHERS USE MINIATURE IRON BALLS AVERAGING ABOUT 0.015 IN. DIAM. WHICH ARE NORMALLY USED FOR COUNTERWEIGHTING CRANES AND SIMILAR EQUIPMENT. COST IS ONLY ABOUT 8 CENTS/LB. EQUIPMENT FOR DISTRIBUTING IRON BALLS OVER A PRECISELY DEFINED AREA OF GROUND WAS DESIGNED AND CONSTRUCTED, AND A MAGNETIC CROSS- SECTION SAMPLING DEVICE WAS TESTED. TESTS SHOW THAT THE SYSTEM REQUIRES LESS EQUIPMENT AND TRAINED PERSONNEL THAN OTHERS, WHILE HAVING A HIGH DEGREE OF ACCURACY AND REPRODUCIBILITY. VARIATIONS OF THE TECHNIQUE ALLOW IMMEDIATE ESTIMATES OF CHEMICAL DISTRIBUTION BY VISUAL MEANS, WHICH MAKES IT SUITABLE FOR CHECKING EQUIPMENT IN THE FIELD.
