DILUTED NEWTONIAN SLURRY INJECTED INTO PULVERISED SOILS

THE INJECTION OF PULVERISED SOILS IS DONE BY THE USE OF WATER MIXED SLURRY WHICH BEHAVES LIKE A FLUID. THE SLURRY DOES NOT COMPLETELY FILL THE VOIDS BECAUSE OF A TRANSITION ZONE WHICH EXISTS AT ITS FRONT. A STUDY OF THE TRANSITION FRONT WAS CARRIED OUT. THE AUTHORS REVIEW CERTAIN PHENOMENA CONCERNING FLOW IN POROUS MEDIUMS. IN THE CASE OF INJECTED SLURRIES, THE VISCOSITY AND SPECIFIC WEIGHT ARE GREATER THAN THOSE OF THE POREWATER IN THE SOIL, SO TO ASSESS THE INFLUENCE OF THESE CHARACTERISTICS IT IS NECESSARY TO REVERT TO THE CAPILLARY TUBE. ONLY WATER- MIXABLE NEWTONIAN SLURRIES, OF GREATER WEIGHT AND VISCOSITY THAN WATER ITSELF, WERE USED, AND FLOW IN A VERTICAL TUBE AND A HORIZONTAL SECTOR OF CONSTANT THICKNESS WAS STUDIED. THE MEDIUMS INJECTED WERE MADE UP WITH GLASS BALLS OR NATURAL SAND, AND THE SLURRY OF SODIUM SILICATE /APART FROM THE GLYCERINE TEST/. THE SLURRY WAS UNIFORMLY DYED CONGO RED, AND AT A SECOND STAGE PHENOPHTALEIN WAS LET INTO THE PORE WATER TO RENDER THE TRANSITION ZONES VISIBLE. A CAMERA WAS USED TO SHOW THE PROGRESSION OF THE DISPERSION FRINGE. A GRAPHIC REPRESENTATION WAS PRODUCED, WITH ORDINATES REPRESENTING THE CONCENTRATION SLURRY AND ABSCISSES REPRESENTING THE THEORETIC LENGTH OF THE INJECTION /BEING THE DIVISION OF INJECTED VOLUME BY NET SECTION NC OFFERED TO THE FLOW/. THE INJECTION TESTS IN A VERTICAL COLUMN DO NOT CORRESPOND TO ANY PRACTICAL APPLICATION, BUT THEY SERVE TO INDICATE CERTAIN IMPORTANT POINTS CONCERNING THE DIFFUSION FRINGE EXISTING AT THE FRONT OF THE INJECTION /THE INFLUENCE OF THE LENGTH AND SPEED OF THE INJECTION/. IN SOME CASES THE REPLACEMENT OF PORE WATER BY THE SLURRY DID NOT OCCUR UNTIL THE VOLUME OF SLURRY INJECTED WAS DOUBLE THAT OF THE WATER. TOP AND BOTTOM INJECTION WAS NOT EFFECTED WITHOUT CONSIDERATION AS TO WHETHER THE SPEED EXCEEDED CRITICAL VALUE. THIS IS A FUNCTION OF THE VISCOSITIES AND SPECIFIC WEIGHTS OF THE SLURRY AND PORE WATER, AND OF PERMEABILITY. RESULTS SHOWED THAT A BADLY INJECTED NEWTONIAN SLURRY WOULD INFILTRATE INTO THE LOWER PERMEABLE LAYERS UNDER THE EFFECT OF GRAVITY. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT TO FILL ALL THE VOIDS IN A SOIL WITH SLURRY, IT IS NECESSARY TO INJECT A VOLUME CONSIDERABLY SUPERIOR TO THAT OF THE VOIDS, AND TO PROPERLY CONTROL THE FLOW OF THE INJECTION.
