Road construction using lateritic gravel in Western Australia
Western Australia has an extensive network of bitumen surfaced roads carrying low and medium volumes of traffic. Lateritic gravels have been widely used in the pavement of these roads. The performance of these gravels has generally been better than might be predicted on the basis of particle size distribution and plasticity tests alone. In this paper the characteristics of some lateritic materials which have been used are presented. Evidence of the increase of the strength (self stabilisation) of lateritic gravels in road pavements is also presented (A).
